Digital Painting: Prehistoric Cave Art

Artist Statement:
After watching the video by Chris Gaynor on how to render different lighting effects in Photoshop, I did a quick Google images search for “cave paintings” and looked at several authentic examples. I tried to use these examples as inspiration when creating my own piece. I wanted the painting to appear as if someone had literarily ground rock into rock to create the designs. For this reason, I avoided the use of colors outside of those that might seem natural to this cave’s environment. I also avoided the use of too much detail, either in my lines or in my blends. I pictured the powder being left behind from grinding a rock on rock and tried to make the colors layer, rather than blend into one another too seamlessly. Once I was satisfied with the shapes and colors, I attempted to age the piece by applying all of the techniques covered in Chris Gaynor’s video. I had a lot of fun with this project and look forward to everything that this course has in store during the semester.
