Steven Milanese English Composition July 30, 2010 Original Post When reading the essay, there were two descriptive elements that stood out from the others. They both involved Anna a young Polish woman from “an industrial town outside of Warsaw” and how, when confronted by the teacher, she “stared down at her lap as though the appropriate comeback were stitched somewhere alongside the zipper of her slacks”. This struck me as a powerful description because it immediately triggered a memory of a young shy girl with whom I had shared a desk with back in the sixth grade. She would do… Read More…

Responding to Pop Culture: Eureka (television show)

Responding to Pop Culture: Eureka (television show) Eureka is a television show that airs on the SyFy channel and is later made available for digital streaming on hulu. Several months ago, as part of a proof of concept experiment I canceled my cable and in place of the old cable boxes installed a network of multimedia servers. The resulting network allows me to stream hi-definition digital media like hulu, to each of the televisions throughout my home. The whole system is administrated through a custom web portal developed by my business partner, Jared Lawnadales and myself. Your probably wondering what… Read More…

Responding to Pop Culture: Facebook Facebook has had a tremendous global effect in terms of how people share information about themselves, their careers and their lives online. Its global reach transcends geographical boundaries, changing the way people interact socially, professionally and politically. The degree to which Facebook has become a part of the social, economical and political landscape is perhaps best represented by the fact that the service recently exceeded five-hundred million global subscribers. This number is especially impressive when you consider this number accounts for an estimated one third of the total number of global internet users. Many suggest… Read More…

Memoir: Significant Moment (What Really Matters)

I put the key in the door’s lock, turned it and like so many mundane days before this one, my day was complete and I could finally head home for the day. I’d worked at the pool store for nearly four years now and despite being the store’s manager, I despised my job. Having said that, I was quite successful at my job and made a reasonably comfortable living at it. As is often the case when you have a family to support, the things you desire often get set aside for the things you need and I needed this… Read More…

It dares individuals to simply ask the question… Read More…

Reader Response: Persepolis (Graphic Novel)

Assignment: Reader Response “Persepolis” I enjoyed reading Persepolis to the point that I found myself wondering what might have happened later on in life to the little girl. The stark contrast of the black and white illustrations do a very nice job at communicating the expressions, actions and emotions of the story’s characters. This contrast also works well to convey the emotional setting of the room itself. For example, the use of dark empty space above a child resting her head with her arms folded on a table. White wind like wavy lines and vague ghostlike representations of her father… Read More…
